INFUSING BEYOND THE BASICS: GLYCERIN & ALCOHOL TINCTURES
Infusing Beyond the Basics: Glycerin & Alcohol Tinctures
Discover alternative infusion methods using food-grade glycerin and high-proof alcohol for versatile edibles.
While butter and oil are popular infusion mediums, food-grade glycerin and high-proof alcohol offer unique advantages for cannabis edibles. Glycerin tinctures are a great option for those avoiding fats or alcohol. They are less potent than alcohol or oil infusions due to glycerin's lower solubility for cannabinoids, but they offer a sweet taste and are excellent for adding to beverages or baking. To make a glycerin tincture, decarboxylated cannabis is steeped in heated food-grade glycerin for several hours or even weeks, often in a double boiler or slow cooker. Alcohol tinctures, made with high-proof grain alcohol (like Everclear), are highly potent and fast-acting. They extract a broader spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes and can be consumed sublingually, added to drinks, or used in cooking where the alcohol evaporates. The 'Green Dragon' method involves soaking decarboxylated cannabis in alcohol for weeks, shaking daily. Both methods require careful straining to remove plant material. These alternative infusions expand the possibilities for cannabis culinary creations, offering different flavor profiles, absorption rates, and dietary considerations.
